Dubai is preparing to host the 34th edition of the Dubai International Basketball Championship, which will take place from January 24, 2025 to February 2, 2025, with the participation of elite clubs and national teams from various countries, in one of the most prominent sporting events in the region.
This year's tournament features 10 teams, with Lebanese clubs Al-Hikma and Beirut leading the pack after the withdrawal of last year's champions, Al-Riyadi Beirut. The Tunisian national team, the UAE national team, and Al-Nasr and Al-Sharjah clubs from the UAE are also participating. Other teams include Al-Ahli Tripoli from Libya, Al-Ittihad Amman from Jordan, and two teams from the Philippines, most notably Strong Group, which boasts former NBA star DeMarcus Cousins, formerly of the New Orleans Pelicans and Los Angeles Lakers, who replaced his compatriot Dwight Howard.
Some sources had previously indicated the possibility of NBA star Derrick Rose joining Cousins and Howard, but these expectations did not materialize.
The tournament is held in a group stage format, with the participating teams distributed as follows:
Group 1:
Strong Group (Philippines)
Beirut (Lebanon)
Oman Union (Jordan)
Al Nasr (UAE)
UAE national team (Emirates)
Group Two:
Zamboanga (Philippines)
Al-Hikma (Lebanon)
Al-Ahli Tripoli (Libya)
Sharjah (UAE)
Tunisia national team (Tunisia).
