In a move aimed at regulating the work of basketball academies in Lebanon and setting standards for them, the Lebanese Basketball Federation announced the “Academic Accreditation of Academies” project, during a press conference held at the Antoine Choueiri headquarters in the presence of the Federation’s President Akram Halabi, his deputy Ibrahim Basil, Secretary General Attorney Charbel Michel Rizk, along with the head of the Coaches and Academies Committee Jihad Saliba, members of the Federation, the representative of “Valuxio” company Said Gerges, and members of the press and media.
In his opening remarks, Halabi emphasized that the issue of academies has become a pressing one that must be addressed, noting that some academies have transformed into commercial ventures far removed from technical and educational standards. He added that the federation is not in conflict with any party, but rather seeks to regulate the sector to ensure a healthy environment for developing young talent. He stressed that academies that fail to adhere to the required standards will not be permitted to participate in academy and age-group championships.
For his part, Jihad Saliba announced the launch of the "Academic Accreditation" project, which aims to evaluate academies and encourage them to meet technical and health standards. He emphasized that the goal is not to close any academy, but rather to help them improve their performance and develop their capabilities. He explained that there are several criteria that must be met by Islamic academies, including facilities and equipment, training courses for coaches, and internal policies that ensure the safety of players, especially young athletes.
Saliba also announced that the academies will be subject to a classification process according to gold, silver and bronze categories, based on evaluation forms accompanied by a field inspection conducted by the company “Valuxio”, provided that the academies are given a year to complete their files and apply the required standards.
For his part, John Dunia, coordinator of the Academic Accreditation Committee, reviewed the details of the project and the standards that will be adopted to evaluate the academies.
At the conclusion of the conference, the president of the federation and members of the committee answered journalists' questions, stressing that this initiative will contribute to the development of Lebanese basketball by providing a safe and advanced sporting environment for future generations.
