The International Aquatics Federation (IAAF), headed by Kuwaiti Hussein Al-Musallam, issued a decision today allowing representatives from Russia and Belarus to participate in championships in the same manner as their counterparts from other nationalities. This includes the use of the Russian and Belarusian flags, national anthems, and team uniforms. The IAAF also decided to amend its regulations regarding the participation of athletes during periods of political conflict and war. With this decision, the regulations concerning the participation of athletes in aquatics championships during periods of political conflict and war will no longer apply to athletes holding Russian or Belarusian sporting citizenship. IAAF President Hussein Al-Musallam stated, "Over the past three years, the IAAF has successfully ensured that political conflicts remain outside the arenas of sporting competition, and we are determined to ensure that sport, swimming pools, and open water remain places where athletes from all countries can come together to compete fairly without discrimination."
