Czech Vondrousova withdraws

Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova has been forced to withdraw from the grasscourt tournament in Berlin after suffering a worrying injury ahead of the tournament.

Several press sources reported that the Czech player, who won her first Grand Slam title, fell hard during the second round match in the Berlin tournament against Russian Anna Kalinskaya.

Vondrousova was leading 5-3 when she fell, got up cautiously holding her right thigh and took a medical timeout.

She returned to the court wearing a large bandage and played two more sets, but lost them.

As the defending champion, Vondrousova is scheduled to play her first-round match at Wimbledon on Centre Court on July 2.
